Description

Stem partly subterraneous, 5-12 mm thick, sometimes ± tuberous. Leaves rosulate; stipules broadly ovate to elliptic, 0.2-0.3 mm long; petiole 3-10(-20) cm long; blade chartaceous, reniform (to cordiform or to suborbicular), 3.5-8.5 x 3.5-10 cm, apex rounded, base cordate, margin crenate-dentate to sinuate, sometimes lobate or to 3-5-fid, scabrous to scabridulous above, puberulous on the veins beneath; secondary veins 3-4(-5) pairs. Inflorescences unisexual, at least the flowering face reddish-brown to purplish; receptacle discoid to shallowly cup-shaped, orbicular, ca. 1 cm in diam.Endocarp body smooth.

Distribution

Amazon Basin present, Guianas absent, Northern Central Brazil present, near the southern border of Surinam present
Northern Central Brazil and Amazon Basin, not found in the Guianas, but collected near the southern border of Surinam.

Notes

Three other subspecies are recognized; subsp. cayapia in East Brazil, subsp. vitifolia (Gardner) C.C. Berg, mainly in the southern part of Central Brazil, and subsp. paraguariensis (Hassi.) C.C. Berg, mainly in Paraguay.
