Description

Herb or scandent shrub 0.5-3 m tall. Stem erect or ascending, obtusely quadrangular, shallowly sulcate, at least above glabrous or sparingly puberulous. Petiole slender, 8-35 mm long, channel puberulous with minute curved trichomes; blade ovate to oblong-ovate, 8-15 x 2.5-6.5 cm, firm, entire or undulate, acuminate to long acuminate at apex (tip itself acute), obtuse or rounded at base, sometimes obliquely so, both surfaces glabrous or nearly so; primary vein and secondary veins (6-8 pairs) prominent, glabrous or sometimes sparingly puberulous with recurved trichomes. Inflorescence a terminal panicle, initially small but becoming large and much branched with age, 5-9 x 2-4 cm (without corollas), flowers secund and crowded or distant (5-7 mm) with age, rachis and peduncle moderately puberulous; peduncle 10-30 mm long; bracts subtending flowers subulate or narrowly triangular, 1.5 x 0.5 mm, sharply acute, margin eciliate, lower branches of panicle subtended by small, narrow leaf blades; bracteoles subulate, 1-2 x 0.25 mm, margin eciliate. Flowers subsessile; calyx 5-lobed, 6-8 mm long, deeply segmented, lobes subequal, oblong-lanceolate, 5-7 x 0.8-1.25 mm, glabrous to hirtellous with a mixture of glandular and eglandular trichomes, margin eciliate; corolla pale red to dull crimson, 30-38(-40) mm long, glabrous or upper portion sparingly puberulous, some trichomes glandular, tube 12-16 mm long, 3-5 mm in diam., lips subequal, upper lip erect, narrowly ovate, 22-25 x 4-5 mm, rounded and entire at tip, lower lip erect or somewhat spreading, oblong, 20-22 mm long, lobes ovate, 2-25 x 1-2 mm, all ovate and apically rounded; stamens exserted 18-24 mm beyond mouth of corolla tube, anther thecae subequal, subparallel, subequally attached to a connective 0.5 mm broad; style 20-28 mm long, slightly shorter than stamens, sparingly and minutely hirtellous, stigma minute, subcapitate. Capsule 9-12 x 4-5 x 2-2.5 mm, puberulent, stipe 4-5 mm long, body ovoid to subspheric, 5-7 mm long; seeds 4, lenticular, 2.5-3 x 2.5-3 x 0.5 mm, glabrous, slightly roughened.
