Description

Tree, c. 10 m tall. Branchlets initially densely fulvous tomentose by adpressed stellate hairs, later subglabrous, dark brown, densely lenticellate; Leaves coriaceous, elliptic-oblong, 8-14 by 4-6 cm; Stipules ovate, 3 by 2 mm. Fruit ovoid, 1½-1⅔ cm long, 1½ cm ø, glabrous, chocolate-brown, top rounded-acute, base rounded, scar concave, 7 mm ø;

Distribution

Asia-Tropical: New Guinea present, Sepik area present, Vogelkop Peninsula present
Malesia: New Guinea (Vogelkop Peninsula and Sepik area).

Notes

The male inflorescence in LEDERMANN'S specimens is too badly preserved for description.
The fruiting specimen BW 15331 agrees very well with MARKGRAF'S drawing of the cupule and fruit of LEDERMANN 11523 (†) but for the smaller size, which was cited by MARKGRAF (nuts up to 3 by 2½ cm); the leaves perfectly agree with those of LEDERMANN 8729 (WRSL).
